PRESENTING
JETLAG FESTIVAL 2022

SERENDIPITY!

The term Serendipity comes from the toponym Serendip (an old name for Sri Lanka), derived from a Sanskrit word, which included a meaning of “island”. In the fairy tale The Three Princes of Serendip, the protagonists are always finding good things without looking for them, accidentally or by insights. The word took root in different languages, with the meaning of a good chance, the occurrence and development of events in a happy or beneficial way. But Serendipity does not only mean this. It refers to the blessing omen, the predestined good, to that very force that makes good luck happen. It also refers to our own intuition, our connectedness, our capacity to discover what is deep, valuable, real. These gifts have been continuously and repeatedly manifested at JetLAG, which is abundant with beautiful coincidences, inspiring encounters, with so many awesome things to share, to cherish, to thank for, to celebrate with a lot of creativity and joy. At JetLAG you’ll find what you love and you’ll love what you find. And this is also Serendipity.

JETLAG 2022: NO WAR

JETLAG NO WAR

JetLAG-2022 is focused on the anti-war message and a fundraiser, although we wish and hope that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine will end by the time the festival comes around. We know that even once this war is over, a more continuous, global and vicious circle of war, violence, repressions, hatred, partitioning, division and displacement, will be still ongoing as it has always been. We therefore, see it as a time to contemplate the roots of a great tradition of open-air music festivals countering this evil with the wisdom, beauty and boldness of the liberal and transformational arts, striving for freedom, peace and justice, for a better world to come.

Symbolically enough, JetLAG’s site is located near Woodstock, where one of the most memorable and iconic festivals relevant to this great tradition has taken place once upon a time. The peaceworker and freedom-seeker spirit of such festivals, utterly American, is also very international. It has similar and different channels all over the world. We share the legacy of the Soviet Joan Baezes and Bob Dylans, the “bardic (folk) song” movement with its underground open-air forest “slyoty” (gatherings), the clandestine productions, and other social and cultural resistance practices from direct protests to internal and external emigration.

As a diaspora-initiated festival of three generations, we recognize immigration, displacement and exile as our shared destiny, which is also, in fact, an American destiny. We dedicate JetLAG-2022 to supporting Ukrainian refugees. Our goal is to collect 50K from the JetLAG ticket sales profit, merchandise sales and donations and to donate it to the refugee aid efforts. We encourage all of you to support this cause, as well as join all kinds of actions, performances and workshops that would reinforce the JetLAG-2022 spirit.

Limited Edition Screen Prints (PICTURED Below)

We are so thrilled to announce these custom posters for each stage at the festival – Main Stage, PANGEA ,Spell Art, created by JetLAGger, Valerie Mirra. These posters are inspired by nature, folk art motifs, and revolutionary rock posters from the 1960. All funds will return to the artist and will be donated to organizations and individuals providing relief and aid to Ukranians within the country, and to those seeking refuge across borders.

About the Artist: Valerie Mirra /  valerieauroramirra.com  / @mirraportal on Instagram

Valerie Mirra is a Belarusian artist completing her BFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design.  At its heart, her work is centered around the vivid connections found in nature. From micro- to macrocosm, Valerie looks at organic patterns juxtaposed with individual narratives through symbolism, symmetry, and free-flowing forms. Influenced by the art movements of magical-realism and visionary art, Valerie looks at spirituality through a lens of magic and fascination. Guided by the belief that ancestral wisdom is a powerful vessel for deeply understanding ourselves and our connection to the world, archetypes found in folklore and myth connect her work to themes of environmental consciousness. By looking at natural symbiosis interwoven with human stories, we remember our tether to the land and our spirits. In a time riddled with uncertainty, remembering that division between people and between people and nature does not truly exist, brings her great solace. “

About the Posters: – Statement from Valerie Mira

“Art and music keep the spirit alive. Despite it all, we have persevered through time and continued to create art, sing songs, and play music to one another. The most powerful acts of resistance are those which keep the soul believing that we will overcome.

In a time fraught with hopelessness and fear, we all must act, even in the smallest ways that we can. Working with the ingenious creators of JetLag, I have created three posters illustrating the festival’s stages, aiming to encourage the beauty and perseverance of the human spirit in my own small way. This release of limited edition handmade screenprints will serve to support those requiring aid in Ukraine and to those seeking refuge.

The Main Stage poster is inspired by retrofuturism, space travel, and deep-sea exploration. Channeling an exciting and passion-driven fascination with what lies beyond our world, I wanted to convey the rapture of the exuberant musical energy that always finds its place atop the Main Stage. I was inspired by the biomes of the ocean containing bioluminescent jellyfish and blooming coral reefs that seem alien in their mystery. I hope this poster invites you to float away into space with a brave heart. This handmade 6-layer print is created on turquoise archival watercolor paper measuring 19” x 25”, colored with a palette of vibrant green, deep blue, and shimmering purple hues.

The PANGEA Stage poster is inspired by vintage circus imagery, iridescent feathers of peacocks, and the mesmerizing sonic vibrations of turntables. To me, Pangea’s bright musical minds reflect the defiance and elation of truly indie music-making. The vivid youthfulness of Pangea Stage’s sound is nothing short of mystical, blissful, and free. I hope to capture this spirit in a neo-psychedelic 19” x 25” handmade 6-layer poster on warm yellow archival watercolor paper, full of fiery oranges, dreamy purples, and deep magentas.

The Spell Art Stage poster is influenced by art nouveau, botanical illustrations, and folk art. Framed within a balalaika, the central imagery of this poster speaks of blossoming imagination and wonder. The powerful healing that accompanies folk music, with its history of resistance and tenderness, is the key to understanding the heart of Spell Art. The power of caring for one another, keeping hope, and never ceasing to keep on playing, must be nurtured, just like a flower. 6 layers of sunny yellows, flourishing greens, and delicate pinks decorate this 19” x 25” poster, hand-created on light blush archival watercolor paper.”
